NBC Announces New Fall Line-Up: Bye-Bye, Studio 60

Studio 60 - Bradley Whitford and Matthew Perry

NBC just announced their fall 2007 schedule and there are no real surprises. Heroes, the only new hit of last season, of course is back. I have never gotten into this show, but everyone I ask about it is hooked. Usually, I pick one new show every year to really invest my time in. I’m not saying I only watch one new show, but based on the premise, there is almost always that one show that catches my eye, and I deem it “my new show”.

I’m going to be honest here. I have not had the best luck in picking the break-out show. Sometimes, the new show I’ve picked is great, but nobody else knows it. A few years ago I loved the NBC show, Miss Match with Alicia Silverstone. Alas I was the only one who did and that show glided off into the sunset before season’s end. Other times I just pick duds. Last year, for example, I decided the next big television phenom would be Fox’s Vanished. I was wrong. I was very, very wrong. So, when I realized that particular show was no good (I gave it many chances, but when the only interesting character was killed off, I had to bail), I tried to get into another new show. With Bravo’s all-day marathons’ help, I fell in like with 2 new shows, both on NBC.

Friday Night Lights was so much more than I thought it would be. I loved the acting and the casting was spot on. The same could be said for Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. I found the characters flawed, yet 3-dimensional and interesting. Unfortunately both shows seemed headed for the chopping block. Well, after checking out the new line-up, I am happy to report that Friday Night Lights will be coming back.

Sadly, the same cannot be said for Studio 60. The bottom line with this show, I feel, is that there were just too many expectations circling around this hour-long program and meeting them all would have been near impossible. It’s a shame. Well, see ya Studio 60, I enjoyed you (even if no one else did).
