Let’s get one thing straight: I love me some reality shows. Starting back in the day with The Real World, I have been addicted to the genre. It’s fun to watch the human drama that plays out on these shows. Whether it’s watching 16 strangers eating rats and coconuts on an island or seeing the rise to fame that takes place for the contestants in a national singing competition, I’m hooked.
Now, I am not some naive viewer who doesn’t realize that producers and on-air participants alike are skewing the “reality,” but I can live with that. There are still few things more entertaining than watching Vanilla Ice wreck the Surreal Life house in a fit of rage, whether it is for show or not. I have to wonder, however, if maybe they are out of ideas out there in TV-land. A series called Sunset Tan debuts on The E! channel at the end of this month. It follows the employees of a tanning salon. A…tanning…salon.
I like Workout. I enjoyed The Restaurant. Workplace shows are fun if they have the right combination of characters and if the setting is interesting. A Los Angeles gym where the trainers are all hot and some of the clients are mildly famous: fun. Seeing the behind the scenes of a celebrity chef opening a fancy New York eatery: fun. But when TV execs start pitching ideas based on the premise that if the setting is L.A. or New York or some other thriving city and it centers around any kind of business that even remotely seems glamorous, it may be time to admit that all of the good non-scripted ideas have already been used. I mean, what comes after a tanning salon? Newsstand?…Miami Sunglass Kiosk?…Hollywood Convenience Store? I would skip those and I will be skipping Sunset Tan. Well, I said that about the Flavor of Love, too, so I guess I should never underestimate the power that my addiction holds over me . The 1st step is admitting you have a problem.

I have to say that the Real World was the greatest reality tv show off all time; I am talking about the original ones of course. The first ones were great, but they slowly got worse and worse over time; almost like most of the stuff was set up or something. All other reality shows stink……. just my opinion of course. Oops, I forgot. The best show of all time was the one with FLAVA FLAVE!!!!!!!!
That show made me want to jump off of a building; head first.
