On last night’s American Idol, Simon Cowell was caught rolling his eyes when Chris Richardson expressed his condolences to the affected people at the Virginia Tech shooting. Then damage control began. After the commercial break and apparently after producers told him that he was caught on camera, Simon Cowell went into a spiel about the three judges extending condolences to the victims, and this morning he was on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show to say that he was talking to Paula about Richardson’s performance and didn’t hear what Richardson was saying. Cowell told Seacrest,
I was saying to Paula, `What does he mean, he sang nasally on purpose? I didn’t understand what he was saying.’ So I hadn’t even heard what he did. Then my eye rolled, given what I was saying to Paula…I’ve never heard so much rubbish.
I did want to clear this one up because, you know, this is a very very sensitive subject. The irony is that we did want to try and set the right tone on the show. And then something like this happens, and it just starts fanning the flames. And people need to understand, there are families involved. It’s not right.”
Some execs came to his defense and Fox claimed that they had received very few complaints. I have to think that Cowell is a smart guy and, if he could help it, would not be caught rolling his eyes on live television to such a sensitive subject. Watch the clips here. What do you think?

I think he rolled his eyes not because he doesn’t care about the people who got shot, but that the singer Chris used this to maybe get sympathy votes.. which definitely would justify a roll of the eyes.
