American Idol - Can Melinda Survive the ‘Front-Runner’ Jinx?

Melinda Doolittle on American Idol

I’m nervous for Melinda Doolittle. Oh, don’t get me wrong. I thought she sounded great on this week’s Bee Gees themed show. Her renditions of “Love You Inside and Out” and “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” were great. In fact, Only Jordin’s “To Love Somebody” came close to Mindy’s level, as both Blake and LaKisha were disappointing. I am worried, nonetheless. Why? Why be concerned for the obvious front-runner, the woman whom the judges have piled praise upon week after week with phrases like “master class” and “different league”? My trepidation is actually because Melinda Doolittle seems untouchable and a sure bet to be in the finals, and quite possibly to win. Let me explain.

Remember season 1? When we got down to the last four contestants the front runner was Tamyra Gray. Season 3, the judges favorite seemed to be LaToya London when only the final quartet remained. Season 5? Who did everyone think was a shoo-in for the title when it was time to cut the participants down to three? That would be Chris Daughtry. Each and every one of those contenders not only did not end up the winners, but came in at a shocking 4th place. I’m not saying the same fate definitely awaits Mindy. This strange “front-runner jinx” seems to skip the even seasons, so hopefully we will get to hear that soulful voice the next few Tuesdays. If things go the way I think they should, LaKisha will be getting a farewell kiss from Simon on this week’s results show.

On a Less Anxiety-Filled Note, What Do You Think about Blake and the Beat Boxing?
