The Concert for Diana. The Marathon for Me.

Prince William, Prince Harry, Kanye West, P. Diddy

Yesterday Prince William and Prince Harry threw a massive concert to celebrate the 46th birthday of their mother Princess Diana at Wembley Stadium in London, and I was there front and center from my couch for the long haul.

I had no idea what I was in for when I committed my Sunday morning to the show. Sure, I wanted to see the princes giving their speeches nervously, Elton John possibly singing Candle in the Wind again (he didn’t), and whether Kate Middleton would be there (she was), but I didn’t realize that I’d have to see six hours of other stuff, too.

By the time Elton John came back to close the show, I’d wasted most of my Sunday. Where had it gone? Well, there were 28 varied performances, trying to cater not only to Diana’s favorites, like Duran Duran and Supertramp, but also to the princes’ generation like Lily Allen and Fergie.

In my opinion, the princes should have traded the younger, hipper acts for a shorter running time. On the other hand, I wasn’t in attendance, and maybe it worked for the live show. One thing’s for sure. It worked for impressing the princes’ love interests, Chelsy Davy and Kate Middleton.

Who Should Have Been Dropped from the Line Up?
