Walk The Line star Joaquin Phoenix has not watched himself on film since 2004’s Ladder 49. That means he hasn’t even seen his Oscar-nominated performance of Johnny Cash. Thus when his new film We Own the Night premiered at Cannes, he sneaked out of the theater after the lights dimmed. He came back when the credits were rolling just in time for his standing ovation. He told the Associated Press,
There’s no benefit. Why would I watch? What, just to look at yourself? What’s worst is if you like it. Doesn’t that sound dangerous to you? How does it really benefit an actor?”
In the film, Phoenix is a nightclub owner in 1980’s New York during the drug wars who’s trying to stay away from the family legacy of the NYPD. Mark Walhberg plays his brother who starts investigating a Russian gangster who frequents the club, and Eva Mendez is his girlfriend. Robert Duvall, who plays his father, affectionately called Phoenix “Wackeen” on the set.

That is a little insane. Self conscious is mearly a symptom, Joaquin must either have deep seated feelings of insecurity or self loathing. Or he is trying to manufacture a publicity stunt. If he is indeed telling the truth and he has not seen any of his recent movies he really needs professional help.
If that is true Joaquin needs immediate professional strength help. It might be a symptom of a deep personal self loathing or insecurity.
