Katie Couric’s Bitch Slap

Katie Couric on New York Magazine

It’s no secret that the CBS Evening News has tanked since much-hyped Katie Couric took over. Couric’s frustration is showing. This week, New York Magazine did a profile on her in which she talks about and sometimes doubts her decision to leave the Today Show for prime time. She says,

I have days when I’m like, ‘Oh my God, what did I do?’ But for some weird reason, they don’t happen that often.

Her frustration hit a boiling point last month when she got so angry with news editor Jerry Cipriano for inserting the word “sputum” without her knowledge into a tuberculosis story that she bitch slapped him. The magazine reports:

The staff grew tense when she began slapping him ‘over and over and over again’ on the arm, according to a source familiar with the scene. It had seemed like a joke at first, but it quickly became clear that she wasn’t kidding.

‘I sort of slapped him around,’ Couric admits. ‘I got mad at him and said, ‘You can’t do this to me. You have to tell me when you’re going to use a word like that.’ I was aggravated, there’s no question about that.’ But she says she has a good relationship with Cipriano. ‘We did ban the word sputum from all future broadcasts. It became kind of a joke.’

Damn, I bet Matt Lauer counts his blessings everyday that he doesn’t have to work with that woman anymore. On the other hand, Meredith Viera doesn’t seem much more demure.

Are you saying demure equals easy to work with? What, do I need to send Katie over there to bitch slap some sense into you?
